HOW TO CHOOSE A SAFARI COMPANY |
- Figure out how much
money you are willing to spend, how many days you would like to go
for, which parks you want to visit and when you want to go.
Go to the Tanzania
Tourist Board at the Clock Tower and ask to see the list of licensed
tour operators. Also ask to have a copy of the companies that are
blacklisted and that are not licensed to operate tours.
- Pick 3 agents in your
price range.
Shop around. Talk to the
companies. Notice if they are asking you questions in order to gain an
understanding of what you are looking for, or if they are just trying
to book you on their next safari (regardless of what would be the best
for you). Also, are they open about answering your questions and
interested in helping you get the information you need, or are they
resisting the process? Avoid the ones that are pressuring you.
- Make sure you
understand what is included in the price, and what is not. Normally,
breakfast on the first day and dinner/accommodation on the last day
is not included.
- Listen to the
salesperson and guide. They have current news about which parks are
best at the moment. If they recommend you a different itinerary than
you originally planned, it is probably the best itinerary for game
viewing.
- Get a contract with
all details regarding itinerary, conditions and payment.
- Ask what kind of meals
you can expect. If you are on a special diet, confirm that they can
accommodate your needs.
- Book with the company
that fits your budget, offers an itinerary that suits you, and that
feels right to you !

HOW TO HAVE A GREAT SAFARI |
Be open to suggestions
from your safari company regarding where to go and what to visit. They
know the best areas to visit depending on the time of year and where
the animals are in their yearly migrations.
Review our list of what
to bring on a safari. Make sure you bring the essentials.
- If you are joining
other people for the tour, ask to meet them first. You are going to
spend your days with them, so you might want to make sure that you
will get along well!
- Ask how many people
will be on the safari. Make sure there is enough room in the vehicle
for people and equipment.
- Depart with realistic
expectations. There is no guarantee that you will see predators
hunting or that you will get up and close with the lions.
- Talk to the guide.
Make sure that he is able to communicate with you, and that he is
knowledgeable.
- If possible, inspect
the vehicle you will be using before hand. If you are going on a
camping safari or trek, ask to see the equipment (tents, sleeping
bags etc.).
